1Ask the Right Questions First
A good seller answers fast and clearly. Before you travel, send these questions on WhatsApp:
- What is the exact brand, model and serial number?
- Where did the laptop come from (ex-UK, local, trade-in)?
- Can I test it before I pay?
- Do you give a receipt and a shop warranty?
Ask for clear photos of the sticker under the laptop. A seller who hides the serial number is hiding something.
Red flag: "No testing, I'm in a hurry," or a price that looks too good to be true.
2Check the Serial Number
Every genuine laptop has a serial number. It is on a sticker under the laptop, and also inside the BIOS. Type it into the maker's website. The page should show the same model and the same specs as the laptop in your hand.
Quick test: Compare the serial on the sticker with the one in Windows. Open Command Prompt and type wmic bios get serialnumber. They must match. If the sticker looks new, glued over or scratched off, walk away.
3Inspect the Body and Ports
Look at the laptop in good light. Check these places:
- Screws: Stripped or missing screws mean someone opened it.
- Hinges: Open and close the lid. It should be smooth, with no cracks or loud clicks.
- Ports: Plug in a flash disk in every USB port. Test HDMI, headphone jack and the charging port.
- Charger: It should match the brand and fit snugly. A loose charger port is costly to fix.
Red flag: Different colours on the body, mixed-up logos or a keyboard that does not match the model.
4Test the Screen
Open a full white page, then a full black page, then a bright colour page. Look for dead pixels, yellow spots, lines or flicker. Turn the brightness up and down. Check the touch screen too, if it has one. If you see problems, read our guide on laptop screen problems and repair costs before you decide.
Quick test: Tilt the screen back and forth. The picture should not fade, flash or shift colour.
5Test the Keyboard, Trackpad and Camera
- Open Notepad and press every key. Missing letters mean a bad keyboard.
- Click and scroll on the trackpad, using two fingers and three fingers.
- Open the camera app and the voice recorder. Speak and play the sound back.
- Play a short video. Listen for crackling from the speakers.
If the keys are shiny and worn, the laptop was used a lot, even if it looks clean outside.
6Check Battery Health
The battery is the part that wears out first. On Windows, open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. Windows saves a report. Open it and compare two numbers: Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity. If the second is below about 60% of the first, the battery is weak. See our laptop battery problems guide for fixes and Ksh prices.
On a MacBook, go to Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → Power. Check the cycle count and the condition.
Quick test: Unplug the charger. Does the laptop stay on and show a steady battery percentage? A sudden jump from 40% to 5% means a tired battery.
7Confirm the Real Specs
Some sellers change the specs shown in the ad. Check them yourself:
- Windows: Settings → System → About shows the processor and RAM.
- Task Manager: Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Performance, and check CPU, Memory and Disk.
- MacBook: Apple menu → About This Mac.
- Deep check: Free tools like HWiNFO show the real parts.
Not sure how much memory you need? Our 8GB vs 16GB RAM comparison will help you choose.
Red flag: The ad says "Core i7, 16GB," but Windows shows a Core i5 and 8GB.
8Check Storage Health
A fast SSD can still be nearly dead. Run CrystalDiskInfo from a flash disk. Look at the health status. It should say "Good." Also check "Power On Hours." A laptop sold as "almost new" with thousands of hours on the drive is not what it seems.
Quick test: Copy a large file. If it freezes or takes forever, the drive is failing.
9Check Windows and Locks
Many ex-UK business laptops come from offices. Some still carry the old company's lock. Check these:
- Activation: Settings → System → Activation. It should say "Active."
- Company control: Look for a message like "This device is managed by your organization."
- BIOS password: Restart and press the BIOS key (F2, F10 or F12). If it asks for a password, do not buy.
- Apple laptops: Ask the seller to sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My Mac in front of you. An Apple laptop with an iCloud lock is useless.
Red flag: The seller says, "I will remove the password after you pay."
10Run a Heat and Speed Test
Open a YouTube video and several browser tabs for 10 minutes. Touch the bottom of the laptop. It will be warm, but it should not feel hot. Fans should be quiet, not roaring. Heavy noise and heat often mean dust or old thermal paste. Our common laptop problems guide explains how to fix most of these cheaply.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if a used laptop is genuine?
Match the serial number to the maker's warranty page. Check that the specs in Windows match the ad. Test the screen, keyboard, ports and battery. Confirm Windows is activated and that no lock is on the laptop.
How do I check a laptop serial number?
Find it on the sticker under the laptop or in the BIOS. Type it into the HP, Dell, Lenovo or Apple lookup page. The model and specs shown should match what you are holding.
How do I know the battery is still good?
On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt. If the full charge capacity is below about 60% of the design capacity, the battery is weak.
What is a business lock on a used laptop?
It is a control set by the company that owned the laptop. You may see "This device is managed by your organization" or a BIOS password prompt. Do not buy a laptop with this lock.
How much should a genuine used laptop cost in Kenya?
Entry models cost about Ksh 11,000 to Ksh 19,500. Core i5 laptops cost Ksh 19,000 to Ksh 40,000. Core i7 laptops cost Ksh 26,000 to Ksh 70,000. A price far below this is a warning sign.
Should I ask for a receipt and warranty?
Yes. A trusted seller gives a receipt with the serial number and a short shop warranty. Without it, you have no proof of purchase if the laptop fails.
